Prestige cloth woven for a Senufo/Senari patron by a Dioula weaver in northern Ivory Coast during the first half of the twentieth century. Hand spun blue and white cotton thread with imported red and orange mill spun cotton stripes separating the blocks of blue and white. One of many distinctive styles of patterned cloth that arose in the region between at least the mid C19th and mid C20th as Dioula weavers modified the ancient blue and white checkerboard cloth traditions from Mali to create novel designs for local patronage. Very rare to find in this kind of cloth in excellent complete condition. Ivory Coast c1920 Conservation mounted.
